Welcome to the Master of Police Leadership. Graduates from this course will demonstrate GLI’s Graduate Attributes. They will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the critical issues surrounding police accountability, leadership, evidence-based decision making, policing effectiveness, complex environments and organisational transformation in corporate services and specialised policing domains.
This course will consist of an integrated set of core and specialised units and micro-credentials delivered through practicums, simulations and workshops that will focus on the principles and practice of advanced policing and police leadership. It will discuss building advanced professional understanding through either specialisation:
The current role of policing globally is changing rapidly and increasing in complexity. Police leaders require environments to share, create and develop knowledge and skills that will counter this rising complexity. The Master of Management Police Leadership is designed to professionally challenge and develop students into exemplary Police leaders ready to tackle the future challenges of global policing.
Our blended learning Master of Police Leadership adopts a cross-disciplinary perspective aimed at developing the transformational mindset needed for advanced police practice and police leaders in a rapidly changing world. The course will offer students both on campus and online environments to develop advanced skills and knowledge in police leadership. The course combines the two critical challenges facing police in the evolving service of policing, police as business managers in the organisation and police as knowledge leaders in their specialist field. The course assumes a level of academy police training and an understanding of the practice of policing.
The core aspects of the course prepare police with management and leadership skills and knowledge that results in advanced knowledge of corporate services including managing stakeholder relationship and communication within diverse contexts, leadership and projects, governance ethics and the business of policing; together with the importance of technology and data. This will aid in developing business knowledge for excellence in corporate services and working in an experience-based economy. In this growing economy, it is vital that businesses and leaders embed a culture of customer experience, innovation and value co-creation and change. This knowledge is also of value to field specialists as it will exemplify the skills for engagement, leading others and persuasion required for advanced strategy, service delivery and execution.
These units support knowledge in the second challenge – developing an advanced understanding of the core areas of modern policing and embedding a culture of continuous innovation that enables police leaders to execute new ideas and solutions, to create value for all stakeholders and provide leadership and guidance in complex areas of policing. These will include Traditional Policing, Counterterrorism and community and Future Policing Stream. These streams resulted from robust discussion with key stakeholders and police sector leaders and educators.
The Masters course blends research and best practice in business leadership, innovation in policing, service science in policing and advanced knowledge in policing. Through these areas, the course develops transformative organisational and police leadership capabilities which will enable police managers, police leaders and field specialist to thrive in the current global police challenges presented globally.
